Hot Tub Installation: What You Need Before Your Spa Arrives

Hot Tub Installation: What You Need Before Your Spa Arrives

Installing a hot tub requires a flat, load-bearing surface, a dedicated electrical connection (16A or 32A), and access to a garden hose for filling. Most installations are completed in a single day once the site is prepared. The preparation itself - pouring a concrete pad, arranging the electrical circuit, and planning the access route for delivery - is where the real work happens, and getting it right the first time saves headaches down the road.

This guide covers everything you need to prepare before your spa arrives: surface requirements, electrical specifications, space planning, delivery logistics, and the first steps after installation.

Summary
Hot tub installation requires a flat surface rated for 1,500-2,500 kg (concrete pad or reinforced paving), a dedicated 16A or 32A electrical circuit installed by a certified electrician, and at least 50 cm clearance on all sides. Most spas are delivered by crane or hand-carried and connected within a few hours. Budget €200-500 for the electrical connection and €300-800 for a concrete pad if one does not exist.

Surface preparation: getting the foundation right

A filled hot tub with occupants weighs between 1,500 and 2,500 kg, depending on the model. That weight needs to be distributed evenly across a surface that will not shift, crack, or settle over time. The ideal base is a reinforced concrete pad, at least 10 cm thick, poured on a compacted sub-base of gravel. This is the most stable, long-lasting option and costs €300-800 depending on the size and whether you do the groundwork yourself.

Paving slabs on a well-compacted base are a good alternative, provided the joints are tight and the surface is perfectly level. A spirit level across the full footprint of the spa should show no more than 5 mm variance. An uneven base causes stress on the shell and frame, which can lead to cracking over time and will void most warranties.

What surface do you put a hot tub on?

Reinforced concrete is best. Paving slabs on compacted gravel are acceptable. Wooden decks can work but must be structurally assessed for the load - many standard residential decks are not built to handle 2,000+ kg in a concentrated area. Grass, bare soil, and gravel are not suitable because they shift and settle unevenly. If you are unsure, your Passion Spas dealer can advise on the best approach for your specific garden.

Electrical requirements and safety

Most full-size hot tubs require a dedicated electrical circuit - either 16A (for smaller models) or 32A (for larger spas with multiple jet pumps). This circuit must be installed by a certified electrician and should include a residual current device (RCD) for safety. The connection point is typically a weatherproof isolator switch mounted within sight of the spa but at least 2 metres from the water's edge.

Do I need an electrician to install a hot tub?

Yes. A hot tub electrical connection is not a DIY job. It requires a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit, properly rated cabling (usually 6mm or 10mm depending on the amperage), and an RCD-protected isolator switch. The cost for this work varies by country and distance from the consumer unit, but typically runs €200-500. Your electrician will need to know the spa's power rating before starting - your dealer provides this with the order confirmation. Plan the electrical work before the spa arrives so it is ready on delivery day.

Space planning and delivery access

Before ordering, measure the intended location and plan the delivery route. A standard Passion Spa is 200-230 cm wide and weighs 250-400 kg empty. It needs to be carried or craned to the final position. Measure every gate, doorway, and path between the delivery vehicle and the installation spot. Allow at least 10 cm clearance on each side for manoeuvring.

Around the spa itself, allow 50 cm on the equipment side (where the access panels are) for maintenance and servicing. On the entry side, 80-100 cm gives comfortable, safe access. Consider overhead clearance too - you need enough room to fully open or remove the thermal cover. If you are placing the spa under a pergola or overhang, a cover lifter that swings the cover to the side rather than flipping it upward may be necessary.

Preparation step Typical cost Timeline
Concrete pad (if needed) €300-800 1-3 days + curing time
Electrical circuit (electrician) €200-500 Half day
Delivery and placement Varies by dealer 1-2 hours
Fill, connect, and first heat-up Included 4-8 hours to reach temperature

After installation: your first 24 hours

Once the spa is placed and connected, fill it with a garden hose to the indicated water level. The initial heat-up takes 4-8 hours depending on the water temperature and outside conditions. While the water heats, add your initial dose of water care products according to the manual. Let the filtration system run for a full cycle before your first session.

During the first week, test the water chemistry daily with basic test strips and adjust pH and sanitizer levels as needed. The water needs time to stabilize. After that first week, weekly testing is sufficient. Register your spa with Passion Spas through your dealer to activate the warranty and get access to support resources. Your dealer is also your first point of contact for any questions about settings, water care, or maintenance schedules.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an electrician to install a hot tub?

Yes. Full-size spas require a dedicated 16A or 32A circuit with RCD protection, installed by a certified electrician. Cost: €200-500. Plan this before delivery day so the spa can be connected immediately upon arrival.

What surface do you put a hot tub on?

A flat, level surface rated for 1,500-2,500 kg. Reinforced concrete (10 cm+) is ideal. Paving slabs on compacted gravel also work. Wooden decks must be structurally assessed. Grass and bare soil are not suitable. Your Passion Spas dealer can advise on your specific situation.

How much space do you need around a hot tub?

50 cm minimum on all sides for equipment access. 80-100 cm on the entry side for safe access. Overhead clearance for the cover to open or swing. Measure the delivery route (gates, paths) with at least 10 cm clearance on each side.

Do you need planning permission for a hot tub?

Usually not for a freestanding outdoor spa, as it is considered portable. Permanent structures, sunken installations, or substantial enclosures may require permits. Check with your local authority before starting any structural work.
